I’m starting to see why my brother acts the way that he does sometimes.
He can be such an asshole to my parents sometimes.
I think his junior year in high school, I started to notice it. He was a teenage boy that stayed out too late and was just a head ache to my parents. It all just got worse when my dad stopped traveling all the time. We weren’t used to him being home, and we weren’t used to him having a say in what we did.
Corey got worse his senior year in high school. Not that he was into “bad things” or anything like that; he was just ready to leave here. Being under dad’s thumb just isn’t a great feeling.
I always thought that I wasn’t going to be like that. That I was just going to stay nice and polite, and never argue with my parents the way Corey did (and does). But now, it’s all changing.
My mom calls me “the good child” and my brother “the bad apple”. WTF? We’re her kids. And he hasn’t messed up that badly.
They give him hell because he’s taking a long time to get through college. Well, that’s because he had to figure out what he wanted to do. Hell, he’s better off than I am. And he’s the bad apple?
What if it takes me 6 years in college? What if I can’t figure out what I want to do for a while, and I stay in college longer? What if I graduate and then figure out that I want to go back? I’ve heard all of the things they say about him, and I don’t want them to say that about me.
It’s not that I don’t want them to “gossip” about me; it’s that I don’t think it should matter. I’m bettering myself by going to class, and hanging out, and trying new things. They should be happy that I’m doing this. And they are, I guess.
Now, back to his “behavior.”
I don’t think he ever did anything that every other stupid boy did. Sure, he was infamous for rolling houses, and he played a few practical jokes on people. But, doesn’t everyone do that? Now, there might be some stuff that he did that my parents knew about, but I didn’t. I just always saw his laziness.
That’s another thing. When Corey comes home for a weekend, they dread it. I look forward to it. When we were younger, we hated each other. So now that we’re older, we can relate more to each other. Of course, sometimes he gets on my nerves and I’m ready for him to leave, but that’s just me being a sister.
Anyway, he’ll come home for two days, and my parents give him hell for sleeping really late, and messing up the basement, and just wanting to hang around the house. What’s so wrong with that?
He’s simply catching up on some rest, because he needs to. It’s not like he has normal sleeping habits, anyway. I sleep a lot, so get over it, mom. Him messing up the basement is just him being a gross boy who hasn’t learned how to pick up after himself yet. And him wanting to hang around the house is him just wanting to talk to us. Why can’t they see that?
My parent’s act like he’s a burden. I’m sure that they can see me in the same way sometimes. But you know what? If they didn’t want the responsibility of being a parent, they shouldn’t have had children. It’s that simple.
So, my parent’s are getting on my nerves, too. They have the ability to annoy me just asking how my day was. I don’t know why. I avoid them like the plague. I just have no desire to hear them talk about how I need to figure out what I want to do and not wind up like my brother.
Maybe, I shouldn’t concentrate on turning out like my brother, and try not to turn out like them.
